India's cricketers were left disappointed after star batsman Sachin Tendulkar fell six runs short of a world record 35th Test century, opening batsman Virender Sehwag said on Thursday.

"We were waiting for the historic moment in the dressing room when he was so close to the world record," Sehwag said after Tendulkar was dismissed for 94 on the third day of the opening Test against Pakistan in Mohali.

"But all the players were disappointed when Tendulkar got out. He himself was very disappointed," Sehwag told reporters.

Tendulkar, who shares the world mark of 34 Test hundreds with compatriot Sunil Gavaskar, drove Pakistani paceman Rana Naved-ul-Hasan uppishly and was smartly snapped up by Asim Kamal at gully.

India finished the day at 447/6 in reply to Pakistan's first-innings total of 312 to gain a lead of 135 runs with four wickets in hand.

Sehwag top-scored for India with an aggressive 173, which included two sixes and 19 fours.

"I am both satisfied and disappointed with my innings," said Sehwag, who scored a triple-century against Pakistan at Multan last year.

"I should have scored more runs but it's part of the game and one ball can get you out," said the opener, who was caught by Yousuf Youhana off seamer Abdul Razzaq.

Sehwag, who spoke to reporters after Tendulkar declined to make an appearance at the customary post-match briefing, said he was happy his knock had put his team in a strong position in the first match of the three-Test series.

"We are now in a good position and if we bat the entire morning session on Friday we can exert more pressure on Pakistan and win the Test," said Sehwag.
