Official sources said the clashes took place at several places in the district, including the district headquarter town of Haflong, following a 48-hr bandh call by North Cachar Indigenous People's Forum and North Cachar Indigenous Womens forum which ended at 5pm on Friday.

The bandh was called to demand bifurcation of Dima Hasao district into two autonomous districts.

As a precautionary measure, indefinite curfew was clamped and the situation was now under control, sources said.

As the supporters gathered to enforce the bandh, police fired in the air to disperse them. In the melee, at least ten people were injured, sources said.

They have been admitted to Haflong civil hospital.
