Social and political activists gathered at the spot at Malegaon Manmad road and held a road blockade for about two and half hour, they said, adding that the agitators also blocked the Mumbai Agra National Highway.

Police suspect that the cows were being taken to a slaughter house in a truck when they died on the way and were thrown away on the roadside.

Many shop owners downed their shutters fearing clashes and a few incidents of stone pelting were also reported from various parts of the city, police said.

The agitation was withdrawn after top police officers visited the spot, they said, adding that the situation is under control.
