The Pune Police control room received a handwritten fax at around 2.30 p.m. The fax was traced to a shop in the Ganesh Peth area. The shopowner gave the police a description of the person who sent the fax.

The police are now checking all major establishments like railway stations, bus terminus, cinema halls, schools and colleges, big hotels, major industrial units and IT companies.

Several schools and colleges asked students to leave immediately as rumors created panic. What added to the panic was an SMS sent by the Pune Police, which said: “If you notice any suspicious unclaimed object near any bank, college bus stand, railway station or crowded areas, please call the police control room.”
