HIGH-PROTEIN diet adds value to the life of those on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD).

Doctors at SGPGIMS’ Hobby Centre spoke about the role of diet for CAPD patients on the occasion of Nutrition Day on Sunday. The programme was organised by the Department of Nephrology for CAPD patients.

Head of the department Dr RK Sharma said patients of renal failure were advised to avoid high protein diet before they were put on dialysis. But, it was a mistake to continue avoiding protein diet even when one was on CAPD, as the process led to a lot of protein loss.

Dr Amit Gupta said CAPD actually helped patients normalise their diet.
“Good diet is extremely important when going in for kidney transplant, as a weak patient may not be fit enough for an operation,” Dr Sharma said. Dietician Archana dwelt on vegetable sources of protein. Doctors replied to queries from the patients.

Discussions were also held on complexities of haemodialysis and CAPD. Dr Ashraf Ali, on CAPD for the last couple of months, said the process could be carried out at home. “If one gets formal training for a week and guards against infection to the patient, CAPD can be done at home,” said Dr Ali.

What’s CAPD
CAPD takes place inside the body, using the natural lining of the abdomen called peritoneum. The peritoneum acts as the dialysis membrane. A minor surgery is performed to insert a CD catheter into the patient’s abdomen.

CAPD is done at home, usually four times every day. This simple and painless procedure takes about 30 minutes each time. Because dialysis is done at home, patients must be able and willing to take the major responsibility for their own care.
