Namdev was a saint of 13th century in Maharashtra. He lived happily married with four children. Once when his priest-father got late in the market; his mother sent Namdev to the temple with a full plate of food to feed the Lord, as usual.
Namdev insisted with Vitthal (God) to eat food, which He won’t. He persisted with pure childlike simplicity having tears in his eyes. Finally Vitthal appeared in physical form and ate food.
Since Namdev was engrossed in devotion all the time, his mother got upset. One day Namdev left home and settled in a temple. He was worried over his family poverty. Suddenly a man appeared at the door and gave some money to his mother saying that he owed it to Namdev. Happiness returned to the family. When Namdev returned home, he could not think of anyone who owed money to him. He distributed the money among the poor saying that it would be an obstacle in his devotion to Vitthal.
Once on a pilgrimage with another saint, Jnanadev, the two got very thirsty. They found a well which had water too low. Jnanadev entered the well and quenched his thirst. But Namdev continued in his devotion and said it was the problem of the Lord. Suddenly, the water rose in the well and began to overflow. Water continues to overflow even today in that well in Maharashtra.
Once he was not allowed to sing in front of the temple and was sent to the rear. The temple rotated and the front appeared before Namdev, to the surprise of all.
On another occasion, the Lord asked him to find his Guru in a man named Visoba for perfection. Namdev searched for Visoba and found him lying with his feet on the statue of Lord Siva. When Namdev raised objection, Visoba asked him to turn his feet in the direction where there was no Siva. Wherever Namdev would turn his feet, Siva would appear from underneath. Namdev learnt the lesson that the Lord existed everywhere and in everything.
