Here's a teaser for the young brigade. What do you do with your pocket money? Use it for digging in your favourite food or buying a new pair of jeans or getting your cellphone recharged?

Well, here is a group of some 350-odd youngsters in Ranchi that uses the same money for social activities! They voluntarily donate blood to needy people and provide medical assistance besides extending other help to the people, belonging to poor sections of the society.

Well known for assisting the district administration in providing manpower to strengthen security during festivals, under the banner of Suraksha Dasta, the group is a chain of friends, active since 2003. Dasta members have also arranged marriages of two girls belonging to a poor family.

“The larger part of the money spent in the two marriages came out of the pockets of Dasta members and rest we arranged from our other friends and family members,” Rupesh Chourasia, president and one of the founders of Suraksha Dasta said.

In July, Dasta members also busted a fake para-medical institute in the State Capital, operating from two rooms at a marketing complex. During Chhath, Dasta members distributed fruit, milk and other puja items.

"While milk was being sold at the rate of Rs 40 per litre in the city, we arranged over 120 litres milk at only Rs 15 per litre. We got it cheap as we had donated blood to a woman of the family that sold us milk," said Rajkumar Pandit, executive president of Dasta.
