People thronged the "Bali tharpanam" centres from the wee-hours. Temples in the state also witnessed heavy rush of devotees on the occasion.
People believe that the departed souls attain "moksha" (liberartion) if the ritualistic homage is performed on Karkidaka vavu.
Police and state authorities have made elaborate arrangements to facilitate people to offer bali tharpan at important places such as Thiruvaloom Sree Parausurama Temple, Shangumugham Beach, Varkala Papanasam Beach and Aluwa river base in Kochi.
