According to the police, the avalanche struck Chotali village near the border town of Uri, around 85 km from in Srinagar.

"Three persons in Chotali village were buried under the avalanche," a police officer told IANS.

"Rescue teams of the police and army were immediately rushed to the spot. One person has been rescued from under the avalanche while efforts are on to save two more still buried under," the police officer said.

Although this winter so far there has not been a major snowfall in the Kashmir Valley, the upper reaches have been receiving intermittent moderate to heavy snowfall this season.
