The two youths, Amalan, 29, and Umaramanan, 25, were arrested from Anna Nagar locality in the city early on Wednesday, following a tip-off. The duo have confessed they were in Chennai to procure arms and ammunition, to be sent to the Tigers in northern Sri Lanka, the police said.

In another development, the police arrested P. Selvam alias Selva Kumar, 31, a resident of Lanka’s Killinochi, near Keelakattalai, a suburban area of Chennai late on Monday. A high-tech mobile phone, meant to be smuggled across to the LTTE, was seized from him.

Selvam was also in possession of a mobile phone capable of triggering “motorised devices” from remote locations, the police said.

He had registered himself as a refugee in the Kelambakkam police station, on the outskirts of Chennai, after he returned to Tamil Nadu via Rameshwaram in 2007. Selvam also had other sophisticated communication equipment in his possession, the police said.
