It was three hours after the verdict was pronounced that he surrendered to the Delhi Police at their Economic Offences Wing office in the Qutab Institutional Area.

Special commissioner UK Katna later said they “sent Manu Sharma to judicial custody.”

In Manu’s absence, the court had given a copy of its order to his lawyers, directing them to bring him to the Tihar Jail.

Some family members and lawyers accompanied him to the EOW office.

Manu was presented before Assistant Commissioner of Police, MK Sharma, who is heading the Special Investigation Team probing charges of destruction of evidence in the Jessica case.

Inspector Raj Singh Chauhan then took him to Tihar jail.

“He has undergone a medical test. He is being kept at the reception cell for the night and will be transferred to Jail number two on Tuesday after an interview with the authorities,” a Tihar jail spokesman said. The jail authorities said Manu would not get any special treatment.

Tihar has been seeing a flurry of VIP visitors.

In the last three months, the jail has received former Cabinet Minister Shibu Soren, lawyer Santosh Singh and ACP RP Tyagi. Tihar already houses Lok Sabha MP Pappu Yadav.

The Tihar drill

The jail manual allows Manu Sharma to meet his family members and friends twice a week. He will also be allowed to eat home cooked food during these meetings. He will be served jail food on the rest of the days.

According to the jail schedule for convicts, the jail staff will wake Manu at 6 am. After breakfast and cleaning his cell, Manu will be sent to the jail factory for work at 8 am.
