Top UN envoy meets democracy leader Suu Kyi

Ibrahim Gambari's three-day visit, aimed at pressing the Govt on reforms, is the highest-level mission by the UN in over two years.

A top United Nations envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, on Saturday met with Myanmar's detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon, an official said.

"The UN envoy met her at the military guest house today," said Lwin, a spokesman for Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD).

Earlier in the day, Gambari, UN under-secretary general for political affairs, held talks with Myanmar's junta leader, Senior General Than Shwe, at the secret jungle compound near the central town of Pyinmana, information ministry sources told the agency.

Gambari's three-day visit aimed at pressing the military government on reforms is the highest-level mission by the UN in more than two years.
