Observing that the devastation in Car Nicobar Islands was total, General Officer-in-command Southern Command Lt Gen BS Takhar said on Saturday that the death toll in the islands was likely to increase.

"It would take at least six months for things to become normal in the island," Takhar, who undertook an aerial and ground survey of Tsunami affected areas along the eastern coast, told reporters in Pune.

Though the tribals of Andaman were not much affected, there has been total devastation in Car Nicobar Islands, he said.

The general said the death toll in the islands was likely to increase.

Calling for a concerted effort to provide emotional, financial and psychological help to Tsunami victims, Takhar said there was complete harmony and synergy amongst the NGOs, state and Central government departments and three wings of Indian armed forces, which were engaged in providing relief to the affected people.

He said within six hours of the information that Tsunami had hit the country, Army was in the affected areas to carry out rescue and relief operations.

At present 12 columns of the army were engaged in relief operations along the affected east and west coast, Takhar said and added that help was also being provided to Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Asked about the kind of request from Sri Lanka, Takhar said basically the island nation had asked for medicines, medical teams and bridges.
