The Election Commission on Tuesday derecognised the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee as a state party in Tripura on the basis of its performance there in last year's General Elections and the Assembly polls of 2003.

"The party does not fulfil the conditions for continued recognition as laid down in the paragraphs 6-a, 6-b and 6-c of Symbols Order in Tripura and is thus no longer eligible to be a recognised state party in Tripura," an Election Commission spokesman said.

The Trinamool Congress will no longer be eligible for exclusive use of the "flower and grass" symbol in Tripura, he said.

However, it will continue to be a recognised party in West Bengal and Meghalaya, the spokesman said.
