Manna Ray and Kanak Kanti Dhar have been invited to participate at the five-day London Handicrafts Exhibition beginning February 4 in Birmingham.

"The National Small Industries Corp (NSIC) is sponsoring the travel expenses of the two to enable them exhibit their products," an official said.

Ray specialises in bamboo products while Dhar is known for his exquisite cane furniture.

The NSIC is involved in a massive project in the northeast by encouraging rural artisans and entrepreneurs to take up bamboo and cane based works as a vocation.

It also provides financial and technical support to artisans.

"With the initiative of NSIC, modern handicrafts and its exportable basketries of the northeast got access to overseas markets," the official said.

The Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) has recently organised a weeklong bamboo festival here, with the northeast accounting for 67 per cent of India's total production spread over 350,000 hectares of land.
