The notification for the by-election was issued six days ago. March 8 is the last date for filing nomination papers and March 11 for withdrawal of nomination papers. The by-election will be held on March 25.

Thousands of party workers accompanied the candidates.

The candidates bided their time before filing their nomination papers in view of the political developments in Lucknow.

On its part, the Samajwadi Party has almost finalised the name of Rambhual Nishad for the by- election.

Nishad was earlier elected on the BSP ticket, but later switched loyalties and joined the SP.

The Supreme Court had declared the earlier Kauriram election null and void and unseated Nishad.

A petition had been filed against cancellation of the nomination papers of a candidate by the district administration. The then Samajwadi Party candidate Ambika Singh had filed a writ petition against Rambhual Nishad, who had defeated Singh by a margin of 500 votes.

This time, Bahujan Samaj Party aspirants are in a tight spot as their party supremo Mayawati has clearly said they should not contest any by-election under the SP Government.

At the same time, differences between the BJP and the Hindu Yuva Vahini have come to the fore. While the BJP rooted for Upendra Dutt Shukla, the Vahini run by BJP MP Adityanath was in favour of youth leader Dhiraj Singh Harish.

According to sources Rambhual Nishad and Dhiraj Singh Harish would file their nomination papers on March 8. Purvanchal Kranti Parishad national president Dr Sanjayan Tripathi is likely to file his nomination papers as an Independent candidate.
