According to police spokesman, the soldiers of the army Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the police's Special Operations Group (SOG) launched a search operation in the Wanderbal forest area near Handwara, 80 km north of Srinagar. The security forces, who were working on a tip-off, zeroed in on a patch of the forest and confronted a group of militants on Wednesday evening.

The spokesman said hiding militants fired upon the security forces starting an encounter which ended late Thursday morning. "Two militants were killed in the gunfight and searches are on," said the spokesman.

Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the slain militants. The spokesman did not disclose the name, age or allegiance of the killed militants.
