UK attracts Sikkim youths for higher education

The Dy UK envoy Dr Andrew Hall said British Govt wanted to offer educational facilities to the Sikkimese students for higher studies.

The Deputy British High Commissioner Dr Andrew Hall, who was in Sikkim for a short visit, said that it was the desire of the British government to offer educational facilities to the Sikkimese students for higher studies.

Recalling the long association of the British people with Sikkim, he also offered to depute a counsellor in order to counsel and guide the aspiring students who would like to pursue higher studies in England.

In a chat with the media persons, Dr Hall informed that around 14,000 students from India were studying in UK, adding that he would like to see more students from Sikkim in UK.

"England is a destination for higher learning and we are targeting about 20,000 students from India in the next few years," he said. He also pointed out that UK could work together with Sikkim and could contribute to the all-round development of Sikkim.

The Deputy High Commissioner also called on the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and discussed various issues on the development of Sikkim, in particular about hydropower projects, orchids, floriculture and eco-tourism, among other things. He emphasised that Sikkim had tremendous potential to develop eco-tourism and hydropower projects, in which UK and Sikkim could work together.
