“Acting on a tip-off, the security forces launched an operation in Balijan, Asia’s largest river island. The ULFA militants exchanged fire with them and they were killed on the spot,” Superintendent of Police, Jorhat, Dipak Choudhury told PTI.

Police had information that a seven-member group of ULFA’s elite strike force 28 battalion had entered Majuli with arms for a recruitment drive, extortion and to set up an ULFA camp there, Choudhury said.

The group had come from ULFA’s Myanmar camps through Nagaland, he added.
