The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister was taken into preventive custody as soon as she reached Bulandshahr from Delhi, police said.

She was kept at the police lines, they said.

Bharti said that she was proceeding to Aligarh to meet an arrested MLA Krishna Kumar Nauman, who has joined her recently after quitting BJP.

"I was taken into custody despite my assuring the authorities that I would cooperate and do nothing to spoil the atmosphere," she said.

She said Krishna Kumar had nothing to do with the riots despite which he had been arrested.

Attacking the Mulayam Singh government of Uttar Pradesh, Bharti alleged it was indulging in "appeasement" of a particular community for the sake of votes.

She said the District Magistrate of Aligarh had been shifted from there although he had been doing a "good job".
