The state cabinet today gave its approval for amending the Rules ahead of the panchayat elections later this year.

The amendment would mean reverting back to the reservation and rotation system existed earlier to ensure that the facility of reservation and rotation was extended to different castes in subsequent elections, an official release in Lucknow said.

As per the amendment, the posts of gram panchayat pradhans as well as representative percentage in gram panchayats would be reserved for the SCs, STs and BCs in a specified manner to ensure that they are not reserved for any particular category permanently.

The reservation in members and wards for these sections would be on rotation as per the population of these castes, the release added.
