The releases on Saturday were recommended by a review committee consisting of US officers and Iraqi officials from the ministries of human rights, justice and interior, which found no reason to hold them, the military statement said.

All the detainees released were men, the statement said.

The Combined Review and Release Board was created in August 2004.

It has reviewed the cases of some 30,000 detainees at military facilities in Iraq, including Abu Ghraib in Baghdad, Camp Bucca near the southern port of Umm Qasr and FortSuse in the northern Sulaimaniyah area.
