Uttaranchal identifies 39 hydropower schemes

Uttaranchal Chief Minister N D Tiwari on Thursday said the state has identified 39 hydropower schemes to tab the vast potential of the state in the sector.

The reports on the feasibility of the schemes of the total capacity of 6374 are being prepared, the chief minister said while inaugurating a two-day national seminar on 'productivity and speed in tunneling' here.

Stating that the state would go ahead in the field of hydropower, he said his government would extend its full support to the younger generation to excel in the field of hydropower engineering.

He said if permitted his goverment would send hydropower engineers from the state to China to study the construction of biggest dam there.

Earlier, Uttaranchal Power Minister Amrita Rawat said the state has lot of potential as well as problems in hydropower sector.

"We have been bestowed with water. 15,000 mw projects are under consideration. Uttaranchal is in seismic zone. The projects must be safe and secure with less cost and finished in minimum of time period," she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of Uttaranchal Jal Vidyut Nigam A B Giri said "tunneling is the most critical, uncertain and challenging activity."

However, he said by becoming specialist in tunneling, with less capital outlay and by raising the productivity, we can contribute greatly towards the economic development of the state.
