The district administration even directed the college principals to resume teaching from December 15. The principals were promised they would be provided force hence they should not worry about law and order. An explanation was demanded of the principals for keeping the colleges closed.

After the meeting, principals rushed to the V-C’s camp office and apprised him about the direction given to them by the district administration in the meeting chaired by DM Ramendra Tripathi. Thereafter, LU officials and principals of the degree colleges decided unanimously to open all administrative and other offices from Wednesday.

Says V-C RP Singh: “It was decided unanimously to open offices of the LU and seven degree colleges from Wednesday in the wake of the UGC NET examinations to be held on December 17.” LU registrar AK Damele too issued an order to this effect.

Was teaching likely to begin from Wednesday too? V-C said: “Only the administrative work would begin since a lot of work is lying pending. Teaching would not resume until LU hostels were evicted.” When asked whether the district administration had also directed the principals to resume teaching from December 15, he said teaching would resume but in a phased manner only after the hostels were evacuated. Sources said some of the degree colleges had even decided to start teaching from Wednesday. The V-C said there was no political pressure on him and the decision to open offices were taken in the wake of the forthcoming UGC NET examination to be held on December 17.

The V-C said: “A lot of administrative work was pending, hence it was necessary to open the offices in the first phase. Classes would start later.” The V-C explained that after opening the offices, they would assess the situation and take next decision thereafter.

In the meeting with the district administration, some of the principals raised the security issue, but officials paid no heed and asked them categorically to open the offices and resume teaching at the earliest as per an instruction from “higher authorities”. The principals also apprised them that they had lodged a number of FIRs against some of the rowdy student leaders but no action was initiated against them. The DM was not available for comment.

The district administration ignored questions pertaining to security of principals and repeatedly asked them to open the colleges first. Sources said besides pressure from district administration, some of the principals also buckled under pressure generated by their respective college management for keeping the college close sine die.

On December 8, LU and seven affiliated degree colleges were closed sine die.

The varsity and colleges have declared moratorium on students’ union elections in the current academic session. The seven degree colleges include the Shia PG College, Lucknow Christian College, JNPG College, BSNV PG College, Kali Charan PG College, Vidyant PG College and DAV PG College.
