Ex-Formula One driver Jos Verstappen was accused of attempted murder on Friday after his former girlfriend claimed the Dutchman tried to run her down.

The 39-year-old was arrested and remanded in custody for two weeks, the ANP news agency reported after the incident which allegedly occurred in the Dutch town of Roermond.

The 24-year-old woman told police she suffered bruises and cuts. However, Verstappen's lawyer told media that his client, who turned himself into the authorities, has denied the charges.

Verstappen has endured legal problems in the past -- in 2009, he was handed a three-month suspended jail sentence for threatening his former wife.
