After two days of unrest, an uneasy calm prevailed on the Allahabad University campus on Friday. Despite heavy police presence, the students observed a ‘Black Day’ and held a protest march.

An order of the university asking students to vacate hostels after the year-end exams had triggered violence.

On Wednesday, the students had gheraoed the vice-chancellor’s office, from where he was rescued on Thursday evening. The students immediately went on a rampage, burning cars and damaging university property, resulting in a lathicharge by the police.

On Friday, the students handed over a memorandum addressed to the President Pratibha Patil at the district collectorate, protesting against the lathicharge and demanding action against the policemen involved.
