Cheers to Mamata Banerjee’s ‘better safe than sorry’ policy

Nightclubs and bars in Kolkata are infamous for hooliganism (Didi-sco lights out, The Pundit, March 6). It’s common to find men, under the influence, passing unsolicited, lewd remarks against women and misbehaving with them. And if a woman objects, they waste no time in questioning her morality. The editorial suggests that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is being a spoilsport by ordering pubs to shut down by midnight. But I believe it is a welcome step, as it will go a long way towards ensuring the safety of women in the state.

Promises, promises!

With reference to the editorial That’s what friends are for (Our Take, March 6), before the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, all major political parties in the fray declined to form alliances with other parties even if they fall short of getting a majority. Though the SP doesn’t need anybody’s support to form the government in Lucknow now, the fact is that it would have been forced to join hands with some or the other party if it hadn’t won 220+ seats. Our leaders should be cautious of what they promise to people. They can’t afford to mislead voters with their false promises anymore.

A crying shame for all of us

With reference to the report Hands chopped off for R300 (March 3), it is shocking that such atrocities have become commonplace all across the country. If this is the attitude of the police department, to whom should the poor turn to for help?
