Prof Vrat, who has been the founder director of IIT-Roorkee, talked about the need for creating a strategic management group (SMG) with senior varsity officials here on Tuesday.

Prof Vrat was of the opinion that all contentious issues including that of regularising the varsity’s ad hoc staff would be sorted out amicably.

But then the varsity’s unapproved staff said that mere statements weren’t enough. “We thought Prof DS Chauhan (the former V-C) would help us. He tried, but failed. Now, Prof Prem Vrat is our only hope. What he says isn’t important.

What he does, is,” remarked an unapproved employee who has been with the varsity almost since its inception.

On his part, Prof Vrat said since he had been involved in building up IIT-Roorkee as its founder director, his emphasis here would be to carry the work forward. “I will like to bring quality in all spheres of varsity’s functioning,” he said.

Importantly, he didn’t appear to be a person who would like to put the blame of all the ills that plague the varsity at present on his predecessor. “My effort will be to carry on after taking everybody into confidence,” he said.

A proof of this came when Prof Vrat was asked whether he would continue the practice of holding special back paper examination for final year students of UP Technical University.

While the new vice-chancellor said he would take sometime to learn about the procedures, a varsity official explained in his presence that “hopefully” with the new V-C’s consent the “special back paper exams” would be continued with.
