It certainly pays to be gay in Britain. A survey published here today revealed that homosexuals in the UK earn nearly 10,000 pounds more per year than their straight colleagues.
Gay men in full-time jobs earn 34,200 pounds on average per year, compared to the national male average of 24,800 pounds, according to a survey of 'Diva' and 'Gay Times' readers published in a daily here.
Lesbians were not far behind and brought home 6000 pounds more than the UK average for women, it said.
Researchers said some of UK's biggest companies are ploughing money into the gay market with an estimated 70 billion "pink pounds" earned and spent in the country each year, the Guardian daily reported.
The gay community has led to huge interest among some of Britain's biggest brands, the daily said.
"Now that the market is able to be accurately measured, more companies can develop marketing plans to better position their brands to attract gay and lesbian customers," said Ian Johnson, managing director of the 'Out Now' marketing consultancy which conducted the survey.
In 2005, government figures put the number of homosexuals in the UK at more than three million - six per cent of the country's population.
The survey also revealed that British homosexuals spent three billion pounds on holidays and another 1.9 billion pounds on clothing last year.
