If you want to attract attention, get angry. Both men and women notice angry faces faster than other expressions, according to a study.
Matt Williams of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Jason Mattingley of the University of Melbourne, Australia, asked 78 men and 78 women to look at sets of four to eight faces showing a variety of expressions, reported the online edition of New Scientist.
The study that appeared in Current Biology found that both men and women not only noticed angry faces faster than other expressions but also found men reacted to angry male faces fastest of all.
For most facial expressions, adding more neutral faces to the array distracted the participants and their reaction times got slower.
But this was not the case for angry faces. Adding more "distraction" faces did not affect the response times for men or women when an angry male face was present, it said.
