Well, this is not a scene from a Hollywood flick, but, of course, the most common scene from the latest cartoon shows being aired on different television channels these days. The high level of drama shown in these cartoons leave the children glued to the television sets for hours and they lose themselves to the non-stop imaginary world of 'impossibles' each day.

Psychologists have sounded an alarming bell for the parents who think that their children are busy watching the kid stuff and thus, this gives them a respite from the nagging question of keeping their kids busy.

Besides, with the onset of summer vacations, television has become the second best pal of the kids.

"It cannot be denied that cartoons are a hot favourite among the kids and the teenagers these days, but too much of affinity towards these shows is harmful," said Dr Kamlesh Tiwari, psychologist.

"When children start spending too much time before the television, they hardly care to indulge in other activities which hampers their mental and physical development. Violence- based cartoons are also not good as they make the kids initially violent and stubborn. They stop behaving obediently," he added.

Five-year-old Amit sits before the television set to watch his favourite cartoon since early morning. His mother often complains of his negligent attitude towards his studies.

Simi, a student of standard one in a primary school, knows the names of all the lead characters in most of the television soaps aired daily.

"I cannot expect her to know her lessons thoroughly but she is too quick to respond while identifying the characters of the television serials," prompted her mother.

"Well, it is necessary for the parents to engage their kids in extra-curricular activities instead of giving them freedom to watch too much of television serials.
The television shows usually leave nothing to imagination and this is yet another constraint to the thinking power of the children which is very vital for their proper development," said Dr Tiwari.
