THE TOWN has been reeling under acute scarcity of water for the last few months. While most water sources have dried up due to paucity of rains this year, the Nagar Palika is supplying water to a number of localities through a network of its pipelines twice or thrice a month.

Civic chief Rakesh Rai, elected as an independent, said at a press conference here today that the scarcity may be overcome if the obstacles being created in his functioning are stopped forthwith. A large number of councillors belonging to various political shades were also present.

Rai said that the scarcity was a calculated move at the cost of inconvenience to the general public by Nagar Palika staff at the instance of mischievous elements outside the Nagar Palika Board.

He accused the Nagar Palika staff and CMO D S Parihar of non-cooperation and creating hurdles through delaying tactics in the way of smooth water supply. Rai and the councillors demanded immediate transfer of the CMO. Rai expressed his helplessness in taking action against the Nagar Palika staff, as it was under the control of the Government.

He threatened to launch an agitation with public support and sit on a dharna shortly to highlight his grievances and force the Government to cooperate with the elected civic body.

Rai said the Jamonia tank and Kahari dam, the conventional sources of water supply to the town, were deliberately drained severely when he took over as the chairman.

After the press conference was over, councillor Jetentra Patel told this correspondent that the local BJP MLA was hell bent upon taking revenge from Rai for defeating his friend and BJP candidate in the last civic election.
