According to villagers, the attacker was in love with a youth from a neighbouring village, who had rejected her and decided to marry the second girl instead.

The victim has been admitted to the district hospital along with her brother.

Sources told HT, their faces and parts of the body were badly burnt and their condition critical.

“The family of the victim has lodged a complaint against the attacker who is now absconding. We are trying to find her,” said a police officer of Nandakumar police station. “We are also trying to find out where she got the acid from," he added.

“They were good friends, but after the marriage was fixed, they fell out with each other. We have heard that Parveen (Name changed) had warned Ayesha (name changed) not to marry the boy, and we are certain she poured acid on her to take revenge,” said Seikh Mohammad, a relative of the victim.

Recently, there was a spate of incidents of acid being thrown on women in Bengal. In June, acid was poured on a resident of Malda and another woman in Ranaghat, Nadia. In Pashkura area of East Midnapore another girl became victim of acid attack in July. The accused threw acid on her after she had refused to marry him.
