‘Legal networking with India vital’

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Women Judges (IAWJ) plans to network with Indian women judges, encouraging them to join the organisation. So far, only five Indian judges could make it to the umbrella organisation of women judges at the international level.

In an exclusive interview, Chief Justice of Panama Supreme Court Justice Graciela Dixon expressed her desire for women judges to join the organisation under the aegis of the Indian Association of Women Judges. On her return to Panama from New Delhi, Justice Dixon said she would meet the Indian women judges and brief them on the activities of the IAWJ.

She said she had rich experience of previous IAWJ conferences to share and some conventional methods being adopted to dispose of cases, apart from sharing the experience gained during the CMS Summit for Peace and World Democracy. Associations of women judges from 80 countries are affiliated to the IAWJ, including China, South Korea, and Taiwan from Asia. “We are looking forward to more representation from Asian countries,” she said.

“Our network will grow stronger if the Indian judges joined in a large number,” she said, adding that she hoped to see more Indian judges in the biennial conference to be held in Panama in 2008. The IAWJ, which has 4,000 members, has headquarters at Washington. “I interacted with the Indian judges during the Sydney conference that concluded in April, 2006,” said Justice Dixon, but she was unable to recollect their names.

During the conference, the judges got immense opportunity to discuss various burning issues including the woman and child trafficking along several international borders. Admitting that the plight of women across the globe was the same everywhere, she said there was hardly any difference between the condition of women in the developed countries and the under developing countries.
