Emma Faust Tillman had only recently become the world's oldest person, after the death of Emiliano Mercado Del Toro at age 115 January 24.

Tillman was born on November 22, 1892, in the town of Gibsonville, North Carolina. She was one of 23 children. Four of her sisters lived up to more than 100 years, Senior Journal magazine said.

Tillman died on Sunday evening in her sleep, according to the Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Centre in Hartford, Connecticut, where she was residing.

"She went peacefully," Karen Chadderton, administrator of the centre, told the Hartford Courant. "She was a wonderful woman."
