The Western Railway has jailed 25 suburban commuters for spitting on railway premises and on the new trains.
While the WR has prosecuted 247 commuters, the Central Railway (CR) has fined 154 of them. The CR also punished offenders by asking them to stand for a day on the court premise. The WR collected a fine of Rs 32,700.
A railway spokesperson said, “Many commuters, through the SMS feedback service, said the use of paan or gutkha should be banned on railway premises and on trains. They demanded action against the people spitting.”
