I had often wondered, in the innocent days of my childhood what God would say to me if I had a chance to meet Him. And even more frightening was the prospect of what He would want me to talk about. I was quite sure that I would be so over-awed if I ever met Him face to face, that I would most certainly be tongue-tied.
But supposing God wants to talk to us now through a telephone, would we still feel the "shock and awe" and remain dumbfounded? This little story of the Golden Telephone brings us to this important question. If we had a hotline to God, how would we react? Would we be able to communicate our deepest thoughts, or would we just be able to mutter some sort of greeting in our confused state of mind?
Let us explore our minds and hearts and set up within our awareness a direct connection to God. Let us try to converse with Him, as we would with our best friend, our much loved parent, or even a sibling with whom we can share our innermost thoughts and desires.
Pretend that you have a Golden Telephone in your home, (which is free of cost to use) and make one phone-call to God everyday. Tell Him how you are feeling, tell Him what you are intent on doing, tell Him what your aims and goals are, and then ... wait for Him to reply to you. In the Resounding Silence that follows your own part of the conversation, feel relaxed, breathe easy, and very soon you will hear the tinkling voice of God...talking right back to you! And if you really concentrate, you will see the sights and hear the sounds accompanying God's reply!
And yes, treat it as you would your most expensive phone, given to you as a free gift from God, your own Golden Telephone!
The story of The Golden Telephone:
A man in Topeka, Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working east from there.
Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read "$1,000 a minute."
Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God.
The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Austin, St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and around the United States, he found more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.
Finally, he arrived in South Carolina. Upon entering a church in Spartanburg, SC, behold, he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time the sign read "Calls: 35 cents."
Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor. "Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was $1,000 a minute. Your sign reads only 35 cents a call. Why?"
The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, "Son, you're in the South now. It's a local call."
