IN A shocking incident, a youth allegedly set his 16-year-old girlfriend afire after dousing her in kerosene and telling her that ‘he no longer needed her’. The girl has suffered over 90 per cent burns and is fighting for her life at MY Hospital. However, there are contradictory versions of the story.
The incident occurred at 1211 Kanjar Mohalla, Biyabani area, this morning. According to CSP B J Salunke, Sheetal, daughter of Raju, was having an affair with one Vikas who lives in the neighbourhood. They often met at a vacant house situated adjacent to the girl’s house. This morning, when the two met Vikas doused her in kerosene and set her on fire. He allegedly told her that ‘he did not need her anymore’. The girl was three months pregnant, police said.
The victim was rushed to the MY Hospital where she told the doctor treating her that she had been set on fire by her boyfriend.
By the time the police came, she had become unconscious. CSP Salunke said that since the police could not take her dying declaration and at present she was unconscious, they were treating the ‘history of patient’ (statement given to doctor) as the dying declaration and acting accordingly. Based on that, police have registered cases under Section 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 307 (attempted murder) against Vikas, who is absconding.
However, the girl’s parents have another story. Though not denying that Sheetal and Vikas knew each other, they said that this morning Sheetal went to the vacant house with a can of kerosene and set herself on fire.
She was taken out by neighbours when they saw smoke billowing out of the house, and peeped inside to investigate. The house in question is owned by one Dhanwantari Bai, who is a relative of Sheetal’s family. Police sources said that the real story would come out only when Vikas was caught.
