THE SAMAJWADI Party and the Apna Dal have emerged as the main contenders for the post of zila panchayat chairperson.Four candidates had filed their nomination papers at the district panchayat office on Saturday.

Their nomination papers were found valid. Of the four candidates, two were backed by the Apna Dal, one by the Samjwadi Party and the fourth was an Independent.

Though the Apna Dal was in a strong position initially, one of its members Suchita Devi filed nomination papers as an Samajwadi Party-backed candidate.
The Samajwadi Party, too, suffered a setback as one of its members Indrawti Devi rebelled and filed her nomination papers as an Independent candidate.

Indrawati Devi said that the Samajwadi Party was not giving priority to the party’s panchayat members and instead gave the party ticket to an outsider Suchita Devi.

She claimed the support of a majority of panchayat members.
Apna Dal fielded Anil Kumar and Shiv Das for the post.

State Apna Dal leader Athar Jamal Lari said his party had 17 district panchayat members out of a total of 39.

He added that Anil Kumar was the real candidate of the party, while Shiv Das was a dummy candidate who would withdraw his nomination papers on January 3.

Lari said his party paraded 13 members, including one of the candidates, during the nomination process. The remaining four were on tour accompanying national party president Dr Sone Lal Patel.

He claimed that his party would win the zila panchayat chief’s election.
