April Fool’s Day signifies an international opportunity to have fun at other’s expense.
Sports stars and news agencies are no stranger to this phenomenon either with several taking the opportunity to play a prank on fans on April 1, 2017.
A popular football website fooled readers with a satirical report that Wayne Rooney was ending his Manchester United contract to make a “dream” move to the WWE and appear at Wrestlemania on Sunday.
Tennis Australia playfully announced that new seating opportunities would be made available at the Rod Laver Arena so that fans could sit beside the chair umpire to watch matches at the 2018 Australia Open.
Cricket too saw its fair share of hilarious comments.
New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum joked that he would play his final season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year before retiring from the game in order to pursue a career as a jockey starting with an apprenticeship at Vermair Racing.
“I decided the time’s right. At different times of your life you’ve got to seize different opportunities and obviously with my links to Vermair Racing and my cricket career phasing out I felt it was the right time to take up an apprenticeship,” McCullum had said as part of the joke.
Closer to home, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh decided to prank a fellow cricketer rather than fans.
His target was Sunriser Hyderabad teammate Shikhar Dhawan.
Yuvraj uploaded a video of the incident to his social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram with the caption: “What’s 1st April without a prank ... this was fun ... Wishing everyone a fun filled #AprilFoolsDay @SDhawan25 (sic)”.
The southpaw was in the gym at the Sunrisers team hotel while Dhawan was in the swimming pool. Yuvraj told Dhawan that he had received a call from the latter’s wife Ayesha Mukherjee asking for her husband to call back as it was an emergency.
Yuvraj then recorded as Dhawan rushed out of the pool and fumbled between drying himself off with a towel and searching through his bag to find his mobile phone before belatedly understanding that there was no emergency and it was all a prank.
Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad play the 2017 IPL season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Hyderabad on April 5.
Dhawan and Yuvraj will be expected to play important roles for the team having enjoyed a fair amount of success last year.
Yuvraj managed 235 runs from 10 matches while Dhawan starred with 501 runs from 17 matches in the 2016 IPL season.
