A major fire broke out in several grocery shops at the crossing of Mallickbazar and Park Street in the southern part of the city on Friday.

Police and Fire Brigade sources said the fire had affected five shops in the area.

Five fire tenders were fighting to contain the blaze, which broke out at around 1 pm.

Senior police officers are also at the spot.

The cause of the fire or the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained.
