Hoisting of tricolour on Red Road instead of state secretariat

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will unfurl the national tricolour at the Indira Gandhi Sarani earlier known as Red Road during a march past instead of at the state secretariat on Independence Day.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will unfurl the national tricolour at the Indira Gandhi Sarani earlier known as Red Road during a march past instead of at the state secretariat on Independence Day.

"Earlier, people's participation was almost nil during Independence Day celebrations. Now people will be able to participate as on Republic Day," panchayat and rural development minister Subrata Mukherjee said.

"The previous government failed to give due honour to Independence Day, but our government will change this from this year," Mukherjee said.

The flag hoisting at the state secretariat would also continue, he said.
