Physically challenged woman gang-raped in Bengal

A 23-year-old physically challenged woman was first raped, then thrown from the roof of an abandoned single-storied house in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, after which her family was allegedly prevented from lodging a complaint with the police by a local Trinamool councilor.

It was only upon the intervention of a voluntary organization that they finally broke their silence, after which police arrested four persons named in the FIR.

"There was a tussle between the family of the rape victim and some people over a piece land. The crime might have been committed to take revenge. We are looking into those aspects," said a senior police officer of the Hooghly district.

Police also informed that a preliminary medical test had proved that she was raped.

The allegation about the involvement of TMC councilor Jainal Mullick has been steadfastly denied by party members.

Subir Mukherjee, secretary of district Trinamool Congress said, "Till date we have not received any such complaint against Mullick. But we have started an inquiry in this regard and if he is found guilty, the party will take stern action against him."
