In another case of classroom brutality, a class V student died after being hit on the head with a duster by her teacher in this town in Burdwan district, 170 km from Kolkata on Thursday.

Eleven-year-old Babli Ghosh’s death sparked protests outside the school, Andal Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya, with demonstrators demanding teacher Rekha Bhagat’s arrest.

Babli’s father Sibendranath Ghosh said, “The school informed us around 4.30 pm on Thursday that my daughter had fallen ill and was taken to a local nursing home. We found Babli lying unconscious. But before passing out she had told her grandfather that she was beaten up by her teacher. We want exemplary punishment for the teacher.”

Somnath Chatterjee, secretary of the school’s managing committee, said, “I was informed around 7.30 am on Friday. Babli was ill. Her classmates said the moment the teacher hit her on the head with a duster she started vomiting.”

School education minister Partha De said, “We have repeatedly warned teachers against resorting to physical punishment... If the teacher is found guilty, she will be punished.”
