The BJP is keen to win back the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, which it lost to the Samajwadi Party in the 2018 by-election held after Yogi Adityanath vacated the seat on being appointed chief minister. Adityanath had won the seat five times in a row from 1998 to 2014.

The five-kilometre road show began at 5pm from the City’s Town hall area and passed through Ghosh Company, Reti, Nakhas and Buxipur before culminating at Vijay Chowk. It also covered Muslim localities.

Party workers shouted slogans of ‘Jai Shriram and Bharat Mata ki Jai’ as patriotic songs played on speakers.

Supporters of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, NISHAD Party and voluntary organisations joined the road show which was taken out amid tight security. Shah, who was accompanied by Adityanath and the BJP’s Gorakhpur candidate Ravi Kishan, kept waving to crowds all the way as people showered rose petals on him from roof -tops. Many people captured the road show in their mobile cameras.

Wearing ‘NaMo Again’ t-shirts, party workers beat drums and some waved cutouts of PM and Shah. The BJP chief sought support for Ravi Kishan, the Bhojpuri cine star, who is locked in a poll battle with alliance candidate Ram Bhuwal Nishad.

Buoyed by the overwhelming response, Shah too threw flowers petals on crowd. “There is a Modi wave in entire country. Where ever I am going such a huge crowd is turning up to support Modiji,” said Shah claiming that the BJP’s tally of Lok Sabha seats in UP will increase.

Earlier, Shah addressed a public meeting at Maharajganj in support of BJP candidate Pankaj Chowdhary.

He said the country was safe in the hands of Narendra Modi. The BJP chief blamed the Congress, the SP and the BSP for what he described as the pathetic condition of the state.

Referring to a controversial statement by former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, Shah said these people wanted to separate Kashmir from India.

Hitting out at the SP-BSP-RLD alliance, he said if it played a role in government formation, separate leaders will be PM on separate days of the week and there will be a holiday on Sunday.

Hitting out at Congress leaders, Shah said, “Rahul Baba’s (Congress chief Rahul Gandhi) super teacher(guru ghantal) is Mani Shankar Ayyar and Sam Pitroda is guru (teacher). He uses abusive language against PM Modi.”

He also claimed that controversial preacher Zakir Naik was behind terrorist strikes in many places, adding that he knew the Congress won’t put him behind bars.
