Changing his photograph, he wrote on Facebook, “I have changed my profile picture to add strength to the #MainBhiChowkidar movement. I appeal to each one of you to join Prime Minister Modi in this endeavour.”

Within two hours of the BJP president changing his profile photograph, it has received more than 44,000 likes, 2,600 comments and had been shared more than 1,300 times.

The campaign was immediately taken up by other BJP leaders who also changed their profile photographs to those similar to the one Amit Shah had posted.

Among those from the BJP who have changed their Facebook profiles are Railways minister Piyush Goyal, veteran party leader JP Nadda, union transport minister Nitin Gadkari, minister of state Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, and Rajya Sabha MP Dharmendra Pradhan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched his “main bhi chowkidar” campaign on March 16 and had asked people on Twitter to take a pledge under the campaign.

The move is being seen as a counter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s oft-used slogan “chowkidar chor hai (watchman is a thief)”.

As part of the campaign BJP leaders have prefixed their names on Twitter with “Chowkidar”.
