Senior BJP leader and five-term MLA Hridaya Narain Dixit (69) is likely to be elected the new Speaker of UP Vidhan Sabha on March 30. Nominations for the post will be filed on March 29.
Although a formal announcement about the likely nominee for the speaker’s post is yet to be made, Dixit is being considered the front-runner for the post for his knowledge of parliamentary practices.
A former minister, Dixit has been working as UP BJP’s chief spokesman. He was elected MLA from Bhagwant Nagar constituency of Unnao in 2017 assembly elections. He worked as BJP legislature party leader in the Vidhan Parishad till July 6, 2016 when his term as MLC ended.
Dixit will replace Mata Prasad Pandey, who lost the 2017 election from Itwa constituency of Siddharth Nagar as a Samajwadi Party candidate.
The Vidhan Sabha is, meanwhile, gearing up for the oath of newly-elected MLAs on Tuesday and Wednesday. As 252 of 403 MLAs have been elected for the first time, the Vidhan Sabha secretariat also proposes to hold a training programme to educate them in parliamentary practices.
