A Railways employee was run over by a train while he was attending to it on platform number 6 at the Charbagh Railway Station in Lucknow on Thursday. The Government Railway Police (GRP) called it an accident while the deceased’s family members accused the Railways of negligence.

According to the GRP, incident was reported around 12 noon when Ram Sagar, master craftsman, was attending to the Varanasi Intercity train.

“While attending to the train, he somehow lost his balance and came under the wheels,” said Nitya Nand Singh, inspector, GRP Charbagh.

But the family members refused to accept the GRP’s theory and accused the Railways of negligence.

“My husband, whose retirement was scheduled this year, was not well. But still he was asked to join duty. Despite being a JE rank officer, he was asked to attend to the train without being allotted helpers or any security arrangements. There was a sudden jerk in the train he came under the wheels. The department had not even informed the train pilot and station master about the ongoing maintenance work,” said Savitri Devi, wife of Ram Sagar.
