The victims, Dinesh Singh and Babita Sharma, hailed from Mathura. The man was working in Bengaluru and had returned recently. Sources said the two were in love but their families did not approve of the relationship. Two years ago, the families had tried to “settle the matter” by convincing the couple to break up, however, they continued to see each other.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Mathura, Prabhakar Chaudhary visited the spot. “Police was informed at around 5.30am about the bodies in Krishna Vihar Colony. We conducted preliminary investigation and locals were questioned. It appears that the man and the woman were in love,” he said, adding, “Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, still we are looking into other aspects too.”

A forensic team collected samples from the spot and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

Early on Wednesday morning, locals said they heard sounds of gunshots being fired, after which the duo was found lying on the roadside, some distance away from the deceased woman’s house. Police said a used cartridge and a country-made pistol were recovered from the scene of the incident.

They also said that when they questioned the woman’s mother, she said her daughter had gone out to attend to nature’s call.
