The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the UP Police on Tuesday apprehended Elvin D’Sa, 80, involved in smuggling of parts of small weapons (revolvers/pistols), in Mumbai with the help of a local ATS team.
Arun Kumar, Additional director general (law and order), UP Police, said that the ATS had recovered weapon parts D’Sa had smuggled from Singapore. He will be taken to Lucknow for further interrogation, Kumar said, adding that the Mumbai ATS had assisted the UP team in arresting D’Sa from Dadar (West).
The ATS has also launched efforts to nab others connected with D’Sa. But Shivanand Shetty, the main accused based in Mumbai, is still absconding.
The gunrunning modus operandi is new in the country. After working on the case for several months, the ATS succeeded in cracking it with the arrest of Mohammad Khalid, Mohd Junaid Ashraf, Kallu Sharma and Vimal Kumar Vishwakarma from Lucknow and Kanpur on April 18.
Parts of weapons were being smuggled from Singapore, Canada and other countries, and were being re-assembled in an illegal weapon factory in Kanpur. Kumar said these weapons were being sold both legally and illegally as “original” imports at prices ranging from Rs7 to Rs20 lakh. The ADG did not rule out the possibility of these weapons falling into the hands of terrorists.
